Was Hitler financed by the US-East Coast?

By Dr. Rolf Kosick

1999 the book „Hitler’s Secret Backers“ was published under the authorship of Sidney Warburg.

Since the beginning of the Nineteen Thirties there are rumours, that Hitler and his party were financed to the tune of hundreds of millions of Mark by Jewish financiers of the USA. In 1933 there was a book published by one Sidney P. Warburg (1), who maintained that the German Leader of the Party received 3 installments of RM 128,000 000 in total. Soon the book was

taken off the market – apparently called back by the publisher-but is still available in a few rare editions. The English original is supposedly lost.

In the year 1983 the well regarded Droemer publishing house in Munich intended to publish the book as a sensation. But in the end the Publisher refrained from publishing, because the  the document could not be proven to be genuine”.(2)

The Centre of Historical Research of  National Socialism in Hamburg verified, that it was a forgery,  proven to be such in 1954 already.

In the year 1948 a book was published called “Spanish Summer” by Severin Reinhard (3) with a similar content, another writing appeared later in regards to the same topic by Heinz Scholl, in which a sum of RM 178, 000 000 is mentioned. (4) Foreign newspapers (5) wrote as well about Jewish payments to Hitler, even though a much lower sum.

In his book “Hexen-Einmal-Eins einer Lüge”(“the witches arithmetic of a lie”) The author Emil Aretz dedicated one chapter to “Hitler's foreign financial sponsors”. In it are quotes from Sidney Warburg's book and individual steps in this process are being described. The Author obviously feels that the allegations against Hitler are justified.

                                                                                                  Antony C Sutton (1925 – 2002)

London-born Anthony C. Sutton published his book “Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler” in 1976 (7). He reached the conclusion, that before 1933 only small amounts of money flowed into the coffers of the NSDAP from US companies and banks, but more after 1933, by means of affiliated German companies, while American companies made good profits well into WW2. He dedicated chapter 10 of his book (8) to the “Myth of Sidney Warburg”. According to his researches there did not even a person by the name of Sidney Warburg exist, it was a pseudonym and the book a falsification. He too verified a sworn declaration by  James Paul Warburg, the head of the American Banking Family, of 15. July 1949, in which he distanced himself from the Sidney Warburg book.

James Paul Warburg (1896 – 1969)

In 1983 the book of Sidney Warburg from 1933 was published anew with the claim of trustworthiness. (9) In the lengthy introduction the publisher explains the historic background and in the appendix he described the up-to-date history of the publication in order to remove doubts in regards to the authenticity of the publication.

Early on already, there were leading contemporary witnesses, such as the President of the Reichsbank Hjalmar Schacht, who spoke out against these rumors of the financing of the NSDAP before 1933 by US banks in the vicinity of Millions of Reichsmark. After the war, the former chancellor of the Reich under Hitler (1932) and Vice chancellor (1933 – 1934), Franz von Papen (1879 – 1969), in his memoirs, tackled extensively the allegations contained in Sidney Warburg's book (10) and spoke of “dirty rumours” and stressed in particular, that contrary to the allegations of the book, not a cent was donated to Hitler or his movement “on part of his own nor any other people's financial backers”. (11) Also Hitler's close co-workers, like the well-respected Banker and first Mayor of Hamburg (1933 – 1945), Carl Vincent Krogmann, declared that such financial help from the USA – and resulting political dependence – did not take place. Other contemporay witnesses, like Dr. Hans Riegelmann, Saarbrücken, assures us that these statements are not based on reality.

The support of Hitler by the means of German companies before 1933 was researched by the historian of Würzburg Rainer F. Schmidt, who too came to the conclusion, that this kind of help was insignificant and that the party before 1933 was mainly financed by the small donations of its followers and by a clever sales approach, selling a variety items. ----------

From the sworn declaration by James Warburg from 15. July 1949(13):

“....2. There was no person by the name of Sidney Warburg in New York in the year 1933 and not anywhere else at this or any other time, as far as I know.”

3. I have never given any manuscript, diary, notes or telegrams nor any other documents to any person in Holland to translate or publish and in particular, I have not ever given such documentation to the alleged J.G. Shoup in Antwerp. To my best knowledge and memory have I never met any such person.

7. I never had anywhere nor at any time had a discussion with Mr. Hitler, neither  with any other leader of the Nazis, nor anyone else to do with financial support for the Nazi Party.

8. In February 1933 (refer to pages 191 and 192 of the book “Spanischer Sommer” (“Spanish Summer”) where I allegedly gave Mr. Hitler the last installment of the American money and where I was supposedly received by Göring and Goebbels, as well as Hitler, I can prove that I was by no means in Germany. Never did I set foot in Germany after the Nazi take-over of power in January 1933. In January and February I was in New York and Washington, where I worked in my bank and was busy with the forthcoming presidential election and the subsequent bank crisis. After Mr. Roosevelt took office on March 3 1933 I worked ceaselessly with him, to establish the program for the World Economic Conference, which I attended as financial advisor at the beginning of  June the same year. This can be verified by means of several Records.

1. First in Holland as „De Geldbronnen van Nationaal-Socialisme.  Drie Gesprekken met Hitler door Sidney Warburg vertaald door J. G. Schoup”, Van Holkerna & Warendor, Amsterdam 1933, German translation in the Country Library in Bern, Switzerland. According to  the introduction, Schoup, who is the  “translator of the conversations” received the English manuscript from Warburg with the instruction for a translation. Since there was nobody in the Warburg family by the name of Sidney it must be assumed that this was James P. Warburg.
