"I cannot believe the American Secretary of State eats with my family's silver," Philip Harmer, a grandson of Karl Nebrich, said last week. "These things must be handed back to my family." Madeleine Albright aka Magda Korbel fled from Czechoslovakia as a child and has cited these events as having shaped her views. After accompanying the former Czech Prime Minister Benesh to London, when Germany marched into Prague in 1939, her family returned to the Czech capital in 1945, when Albright was eight. A luxurious first-floor apartment at 11 Hradsanke Street in Prague was forcibly taken by the Czech Foreign Ministry and allocated to Joseph Korbel, Albright's father. The Nebriches allege that Korbel took possession of old masters paintings, silver and antique furniture. "He took the lot, even the nails from the wall," said Doris Renner, a daughter of Nebrich. When Korbel was appointed ambassador to Yugoslavia, he moved his family and the treasure trove of art to Belgrade. Three years later in 1948, Czechoslovakia's communists staged a coup and Joseph Korbel, a long time informer for MI6 and later CIA, was in danger. They escaped to America. The Nebrich family tried for decades to track "Dr. Joseph
Korbel" in America. But it was not until 1996, when NANA published the alias
of Dr. Madeline Albright, that the Nebrich family realized she was Korbel's
daughter.
