Joseph Edward Duncan was born in 1963, and by age 16, Duncan had raped thirteen younger boys, some at gun-point. In 1980, Duncan was convicted of the rape and torture of a 14 year-old Tacoma, Washington boy. In March, 1982, Duncan was sentenced to prison, where he served 14 years.

In 1994, he was granted parole to a half-way house in Seattle. Then, in April of 1997, he violated parole by having contact with a child, and smoking pot. Next, he fled to the Kansas City area, where in August 1997 he was arrested by the FBI, and sent to Washington.

 
   

 

 

 

 

An Odd Friend Shows Up In 1997

At Duncan's parole hearing, a Jewish doctor named Richard Wacksman pleaded with the parole board to release Duncan into his custody. Wacksman testified that he would support Duncan financially, and take him into his home in Fargo ND. Wacksman further testified that Wacksman's wife fully supported him in this. The board ruled in February of 1998. It said it could not allow Duncan into Wacksman's home because of Wacksman's two young children.

In April of 2000, Duncan molests a six year-old in Minnesota. and winds up in jail. Suddenly, a Jewish real estate developer, and businessman, named Jonah Crary makes his $15,000 bail.

Crary says "We both enjoyed biking on the bike trails in Fargo and we became acquaintances," Crary wrote to the newspaper. "In my contact with him, he was polite, soft spoken, and seemed sincere in turning his life around."

Dr. Wacksman Gave Duncan $6,500

Dr. Richard Wacksman, a pediatrician who once lived in Fargo, told police he gave $6,500 to Duncan before his first court hearing in the Becker County case to help with attorney fees.

Duncan struck on May 15, 2005, at the Groene family's home in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. The victims were found in the kitchen. The victims were Brenda Groene and her 13-year-old son, Slade, and Brenda's boyfriend, Mark McKenzie.
